You want to keep your holiday festivities running smoothly, right? Well, that means more than logistical planning to guarantee that everyone is where they’re supposed to be and that dinner is out on the table at the right time. It also means that the systems in your home need to be kept in great working condition, as well. Unfortunately, the holidays have proven time and time again that they are the most dangerous time of the year for our plumbing systems!
Don’t worry, though. Today, the professional plumbers on our staff are here to share some simple tips with you that will help you to protect your plumbing in Las Vegas, NV throughout this trying time of the year. Keep them in mind, and be sure to let us know if you start to notice any issues with your plumbing system. We know that hosting for the holidays can put a lot on your plate, but you’ll definitely be thankful for nipping any such problems in the bud.
Keep “FOG” Where It Belongs—the Trash!
Your kitchen plumbing in particular is going to be subject to a lot of abuse over the course of the holiday season. You are going to be preparing a lot of rich foods that will be served in larger quantities than usual, and that means a lot of greasy pots, pans, and plates to clean. Keep the FOG, or fats, oils, and grease, out of your drains and garbage disposal to prevent clogs.
These materials are liquids when they are hot. Once they hit the cool interiors of your drain pipes, however, they can congeal. That will lead to clogs, with the congealed fats catching every little piece of waste that would otherwise move right through the drains. Pour off fat and grease into cans and dispose of them in the garbage, instead.
Protect That Garbage Disposal
Speaking of your kitchen drains, having a great garbage disposal in place can really help to make cleaning up around the holidays a lot more convenient. Unfortunately, not just everything can go down the garbage disposal. In fact, the improper use of garbage disposals is one of the most common causes of clogs in kitchens!
In additions to FOG, you should also keep very starchy foods, like rice, pasta, and bread out of the disposal. While the disposal itself may be able to handle these materials, they can act like little sponges in the drain pipes, swelling up and leading to clogs.
Is Your Bathroom Ready?
Without getting too detailed, we’ll just say that hosting guests at your home does also mean more strain on your bathroom plumbing system. If you’ve been dealing with clogs in your bathroom for some time, then you really need to have them resolved before a spike in usage occurs.
Scheduling drain cleaning with a professional plumber is a great way to ensure that your bathroom is able to keep up with the demand that the added traffic around the holidays presents.
