New Year’s Resolutions for Saving Water

hand turning faucetMaking resolutions for the New Year can feel daunting, and it’s often because people set goals that are so high they immediately feel they can’t reach them. We want to help you out with a resolution that isn’t difficult at all—if you have the right advice and have the right plumber in Las Vegas, NV to help you. We won’t be bashful: we’re the right plumber for you, and these resolutions we’ve listed for you are a great way to cut down on your water use. You’ll save money and help the environment, and our plumbers can help improve your plumbing as well.

#1 – Schedule Leak Detection

We wish more people would do this for their homes, regardless of whether they’re trying to save water or not. Homes often have hidden leaks that go undetected for months or even years, wasting water and causing slow but serious structural damage. We’ve often found that the main reason behind high water bills is undetected leaks, and the best way to find them and fix them is to call on our pros to use top technology to find them.

#2 – Install Low Flow Fixtures

Have you got several faucets, showerheads, and toilets in your home more than ten years old? Then they’re likely wasting water every time you use them compared to modern low-flow versions. Getting an old toilet replaced with a low-flow or dual flush model alone can save thousands of gallons.

Consider this: older toilets can use more than 3 gallons per flush, while low flow models use around 1.28 gallons per flush. You’ll have at least a 50% water savings from the appliance that uses the most water in your house.

#3 – Install Sink Aerators

This is a simpler version of replacing older fixtures. Attach an aerator to the faucets that mixes air with the water so the faucet uses less water. You’ll probably notice little difference in effectiveness in the water from the faucet. You may need to clean silt from them once or twice a year, but otherwise you won’t even notice the aerators are there.

#4 – Break Bad Water-Wasting Habits

You probably have a few of these, even as you’ve attempted to get rid of others. These are water-wasting habits you can easily eliminate once you know to watch for them:

  • Keeping the water running while you’re brushing your teeth
  • Running the water unnecessarily when hand-washing dishes
  • Staying in the shower longer than five minutes
  • Running the dishwasher on less than a full load
  • Running the laundry machine on less than a full load
  • Using the toilet as a trashcan (unnecessary flushes)

Make sure everyone in your household knows about these bad habits and makes it a goal to break them.

#5 – Schedule Plumbing Repairs Promptly

Don’t let any plumbing problem linger for a few days just because it might not seem like an “emergency.” Prompt repairs can help stop water waste and it will also prevent the problem from becoming larger and more expensive to remedy.
