Do You Know Where the Water Main Shut-Off Valve Is?

We ask this question because it’s an important piece of knowledge that can help you in emergency situations, such as flooding occurring in your house due to a malfunctioning appliance. Our plumbers are ready to help you with fast plumbing service in Las Vegas, NV, but we can’t teleport to your home. You need a way to stop water damage to the house and your belongings, and shutting off the water flow from the water main is the quickest way to end the immediate danger.

If you already know where the shut-off valve is, we recommend that you go test it to make sure you can turn it: sometimes the valve may get stuck in place. Make sure other adults in your household know where it is and how to shut it off in case of an emergency.

Now, for everyone else who doesn’t know where the shut-off valve is located, please follow us this way…

Finding the Valve

The location of the shut-off valve varies depending on what part of the country you live in. In colder climates and places with basements, the valve is usually found inside, in the basement. For Las Vegas homes, where basements are almost non-existent and the weather is warm, the shut-off valve and water meter are located outside the house.

Take a walk around the perimeter of your house and look for the water meter. If you don’t see the water meter there, look at the front yard to find a plastic cover, probably at a spot near the sidewalk and curb. Lift up the cover and you should find the water meter there.

Now that you’ve located the water meter, look at the pipes going into it. One side is the incoming water main (the street side) and the other is the line going into your household plumbing (the house side). The shut-off valve is located on the street side.

Some valves are simple ones you can turn by hand without any additional help. Others require using a special tool that fits over the valve washer to allow you to turn it. (You can see an example of this is the photo at the top of the post.) The tool is supposed to be hanging next to the shut-off valve for immediate use. If you don’t see it, you can purchase one at a hardware store—and please do so at your earliest convenience. You may be glad in the future that you discovered this vital piece was missing.

The Automatic Shut-Off Valve

You can have extra protection for your house in the event of a plumbing emergency when you’re not home: have our plumbers install an automatic shut-off valve. These valves are designed to close off the flow of water when they detect a sudden drop in water pressure that indicates a massive leak in the house. Some shut-off valves have water detectors inside the house. These valves are useful for when you take long trips. You can relax knowing that in the event of a potential flooding problem, the valve will activate to stop damage.
