Hmmm, there is a lot of stuff all mixed together on these serving platters. Oh well, I’m sure that the garbage disposal can handle it!
Not so fast. Put down the platter and back out of the kitchen. Slowly.
Okay, that last bit was just for a bit of dramatic flair, but the first part is worth paying attention to. Never assume that your garbage disposal can handle everything that you can throw at it, provided that it is organic material. Why not? Because this simply is not true!
Garbage disposals have just one job to do, and that is to grind (not chop, but that’s a topic for another time) food waste up so that it can be disposed of through your plumbing system, rather than being put in the trash and taken out to the curb. However, it is important to remember that even the best garbage disposals do have their limitations.
The last thing that you want to do is to damage your garbage disposal or create plumbing problems by using the disposal incorrectly.
